Rail cyber security | Safety and security for trains
The rise of digitalization emphasises the need for real cyber security for rail. Especially for train security and safety. The targets of cyber security are data privacy and availability but we need accurate, unaltered and complete data to archive it. ▬ Safety and security for Railway ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
In our connected world, we see an increased demand for transportation, it needs to be sustainable and efficient. This requires more and more digitalization and connecting people always needs to be safe and secure. What is the difference? Safety means freedom from unacceptable risk related to human health and the environment, whereas security protects systems from attacks and malicious behaviour. Together, safety and security make railways one of the safest means of transportation.
▬ Secure systems for rail cyber security ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Secure systems begin with the design and manufacturing of components. At this stage, the defence in depth of concept is defined and agreed. What kind of physical and network security is required? How is system integrity achieved? Zones as well as their connexion via conduits are specified, forming defensive rings similar to that of a fortress. And, like a fortress, rail infrastructure and rolling stock have long life cycles. Hence, it is not enough to set up a secure system at the beginning. Maintenance, including the prompt closing of security gaps, also needs to be ensured through regular assessments, as well as the monitoring of software vulnerabilities and network traffic. Guidance on how to do this is given by the risk management processes in line with cyber security laws and regulations.
▬ Rail cyber security at work▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
It is management’s responsibility to define governance and processes to enable and instruct their employees, as well as to supervise compliance. Whether it’s a question like: Where should I charge my phone at work or what needs to be done when an incident occurs, who needs to be informed in what time frame – every employee should know the answers and act accordingly. To be aware of possible criminal tactics and their consequences, you need to be on your toes and have your fingers on the pulse of time. This is only achievable through regular updates, ideally through training specialised for your workplace. Get in touch with us today and find your tailored training solution
