Best Careers for Introverts: Cyber Security in 2023 – Start a Career and Work from Home
So you’re an introvert? Here is why you will THRIVE in Cyber.
Truth be told, I’m an extreme extrovert. Many of you may have already figured that out. I like to be around people literally all the time. It’s my fuel.
If you were to ask me what the word introvert meant years ago I honestly could not have told you. However, I married one and learned quickly.
One of the hardest skills for an extrovert to learn is listening. We all think that we listen well, but in reality, many of us really aren’t that good at it. As an extrovert, we want to make our mark and be heard. The truth is that when we are voicing ourselves we, many times, fail to listen. We may hear people, but we aren’t listening properly.
My inbox often sees messages from people hesitant to get into Cyber Security because they are introverts. They’ve been told that they can’t be successful. I’m here to tell you that it is quite opposite.
It might sound weird coming from an extrovert, but I can tell you that many successful people that I have worked with in this field have been introverts. I will even say that a majority of the EXTREMELY successful were in fact, introverts.
So why is it that they are successful?
1. They are more prone to not only hear, but listen. Introverts seem to do a better job of analyzing the room, the people in it, and the issues on the table. Many times extroverts just hear, but don’t listen.
2. After listening, they process the information internally, analyze it, and think out their thoughts and how they want to verbalize it before they speak.
3. After a long period of listening, they speak up. However, when they speak up, people tend to listen better because they aren’t always just « talking ».
4. Introverts get their points across quickly and clearly. Sometimes we extroverts tend to take the long way around because we just like to talk.
Marrying an introvert was certainly challenging in the beginning, but extremely rewarding in the end. I am learning to listen better, analyze the room, and put my thoughts together well before I just talk. I try not to just hear, but I try to listen. I will say that as an extreme extrovert, it is harder than you’d think. However, I’m getting there. Introverts, I have so much to learn from you.
Introverts have such a huge opportunity to be successful in this line of work. Why? Because this field needs leaders that don’t just hear, but listen. We need leaders that think, listen, analyze, and process information well before the speak and direct.
We need less people that just like to talk.
Introverts, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be successful. There is a great chance that the people telling you that will work for you one day.
