028 – MODBUS Comms and OSI 7 Layer Model
The libesoup library of code for the dsPIC33EP256MU806, specifically for the electronicSoup cinnamonBun device contains a basic implementation of the MODBUS protocol. It’s a great place to start when talking about protocols as it’s message structure is so simple and quite limited in scope.
In this video two cinnamonBun devices are used to communicate using the MODBUS protocol.
Both projects are on github as part of the libesoup library so check out the code (https://github.com/electronicSoup/libesoup). Note that this is not meant to be a robust and fully compliant implementation of the MODBUS standard but in time if I add to the code it might become more robust. Check out the standards documents from modbus.org
