What Is OSI Model?

The OSI model (Open System Interconnect) is a theoretical stack of 7 layers that can be used as a reference to understand how network data flows using the tcp ip protocol. Also known as the tcp ip model , It was introduced to standardise communication to allow different vendors to share the same network. This tutorial is designed to give a understanding of the 7 layers of osi model .

Application Layer (Layer 7)

The application layer is where the application on the chosen operating system connects to the osi network model .
Presentation Layer (Layer 6)

This presentation layer formats the data in a way that the receiving application can understand it. This presentation layer is also where encryption takes place.
Session Layer (Layer 5)

The session layer manages the communication sessions between two nodes.
Transport Layer (Layer 4)

It is here at the transport layer , which is the root of the tcp ip protocol suite that error handling and sequencing is performed ensuring data is not lost. The transport layer also adds source and destination port numbers for application separation.
Network Layer (Layer 3)

The network layer handles IP address routing. At this stage of the osi reference model , the source and destination IP address are added to the data packet.
Data Link Layer (Layer 2)

Physical Layer (Layer 1)

The physical layer is the lowest layer of the 7 layers of osi model . Its key responsibility is to carry the data across the physical hardware such as an Ethernet cable to the destination.
