Omnidirectional vs directional antennas what's the difference? | weBoost

*** It is with sadness that we share that Don, the person featured in this video, passed away in December 2017. Don was a Navy veteran and a valued member of our product engineering team since 2004. He will be greatly missed.

Think you know your antennas? What’s the difference between an omni antenna and a directional antenna? What’s a Yagi antenna? And which antenna makes the best Wi-Fi antenna, or TV antenna or cell phone antenna?

Like most things, it depends on your situation. The guy with the answers is Don the Antenna Engineer from weBoost. In this 6-minute video he explains how directional antennas work and how they differ from omnidirectional antennas.

We’re here to answer all of those questions for you. Do you need an antenna for your car, truck or RV? Or is this an antenna for your home or business?

In short an omni antenna gathers signal from all around it so no matter where the cell tower is your antenna will find the signal and connect with it. A directional antenna captures signal only in the direction it is aimed. The directional antenna is stronger but you need to spend a little more time up front pointing it where the cell tower is located.

We go into more detail and explain the radiation patterns of each type of antenna, what radials are, and antenna design.

Feel free to leave us any questions you have in the comments.
