Microsoft Windows 10 Consumer Event – January 2015
In January 2015, Microsoft held its second Windows 10 event, and while this one was focused on consumers, we also learned a lot more about its ambitions for a platform that would include phones, tablets, video game consoles, and other new kinds of devices. There were a LOT of announcements at this event:
– Windows 10 would be a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1
– Windows 10 would use an updating system called Windows as a Service that would demote version numbers and keep PCs updated « for the supported lifetime of the device »
– Microsoft would bring Cortana and UWP versions of the Office apps to Windows 10 along with a new Xbox app
– A feature called Continuum would “let Windows 10 adapt to tablet mode when you detach from a keyboard/mouse and then back to the normal display mode as needed.”
– Two new hardware form factors: Surface Hub and HoloLens
– Microsoft would drop the Windows Phone brand and use just « Windows » (later, Windows Mobile) for its smartphone platform
– CEO Satya Nadella said he wanted users to « love » Windows, but Windows 10 included bundled crapware, tracking, and more in-box advertising than ever before
