Microsoft doubles down on Windows 10 end of support, announces ESU program

Microsoft has doubled down on ending Windows 10 support in October 2025, hoping you will throw out your perfectly working system and buy a new computer that meets the Windows 11 minimum system requirements. And if you really prefer to hold onto that laptop you purchased new in 2017, Microsoft will, for a charge, offer you Extended Security Updates for Windows 10. In reality, we know that many will hang onto their perfectly usable machines and either keep and run Windows 10 unsupported, or they’ll use one of several methods to bypass the EliteClass requirements for Windows 11 and install it anyway.
