0:53 Jon Prosser has released his renders of Apple’s upcoming Mac mini and as we’d expected, it can certainly get smaller, and thats exactly what we’re seeing here.
The design, as previously suggested by Luke Miani seems to have a similar footprint but about half the height of the current version, and the iPhone 12 design language comes through again here with very flat sides leading up to a top panel that is inset with the aluminium surrounding. Apparently that top panel is some form of polycarbonate, which also feels like a retro call back to the first ever Mac mini, which had a smaller footprint and was a little taller than the current generation.

This is most likely to be the one for the M1X models initially so other than having the thermal headroom, this also has more IO than the M1 model too. 4 USB-C ports, though its not clear if these are thunderbolt, basic usb or a combination. Also 2 USB-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet and headphone jack. The Mac mini also appears to have the same magnetic power supply port as the 24” 2021 iMac, suggesting that the Mac mini’s power supply will be external too just like the iMacs. This does make sense in terms of thermal management.

2:07 Next up, several reports are suggesting that iOS 15 could include food tracking as a part of health features on the phone. Now there are multiple apps that do this already and integrate with health, but there are a couple of reasons this makes sense. First, those emoji I mentioned yesterday from the WWDC teaser… Eat Sleep Code. But Maybe that Eat section is actually referring to that new feature too. Now this also ties into the possibility of Apple Watch getting Blood Glucose monitoring too, though I’m pretty sure it won’t be medically rated for treatment of conditions like Diabetes, though there is still very useful things it could do.

3:35 And next – Apple Silicon Mac Pros – I’ve talked in the past about how Apple would in my opinion be most likely to use multiple SOCs to get up to the levels of performance required – and the latest leaks suggest I’m right I think.

Look at the core counts and you may be able to see what I mean. M1 as we know consists of 4 IceStorm efficiency cores, 4 Firestorm performance cores and an 8 Core GPU. According to the latest rumours, M1X will feature 2 efficiency cores and 8 performance cores, with a 16 or 32 Core GPU based on your needs.
But the rumours from Mark Gurman suggest that the Mac Pro will have 20 or 40 cores, the first with 16 firestorm and 4 IceStorm cores and the second with 32 Firestorm and 8 IceStorm cores. Those numbers tie up perfectly with having either 2 or 4 M1X processors running side by side. That also suggests each would potentially have its own pool of unified memory, and knowing that the M1X is likely to support up to 64GB of memory, the 40 core could therefore be likely to top out at a 256GB configuration.

There will of course be challenges for Apple in making sure that these SOCs can work well in sync, but at the same time, Apple has done this before with their Dual Processor G5s. The advantage being that smaller SOCs are likely to have higher yields than huge dies.

But what do you think, could we see 2-4 M1X in a Mac Pro? Let me know below.

#iCaveAnswers – Should I buy an M1 MacBook Air now or wait for WWDC? I know there aren’t any leaks like this, but do you think by any chance we can get a new Macbook Air or another MacBook in the same price range, with M2 or an improved M1 chip? Btw congrats on 7K 😀

#iCaveAnswers What do you think of the design of the new MacBook Pro 14 posted by Luke Miani and is it possible for the new MacBook Pro to have 25hrs of battery life? Surely it would have less battery life if it has only 2 efficiency cores and more power cores compared to the M1 MacBooks, assuming the form factor is similar?

#icaveanswers With the push to complete the Mac line Apple Silicon transition, do you think Apple may skip the iPad and iPad Air updates in 2021?

@iCaveDave #iCaveAnswers got an email from apple today highlighting wwdc keynote date and time….considering it’s been announced way in advance it seems apple wants to shine a spotlight on the WWDC keynote explicitly….I have a feeling there’s a reason behind it and it’s not software! Your thoughts?

#iCaveanswers Please make a video on M1 Mac buying Guide as apple is including M1 on more and more products it’s getting more complicated for me as it will be my first time experience Mac. #SURPASSMENOT Lol
