The hackers who breached the Riot Games database threatened to leak the League of Legends source code. They are demanding 10 million dollars.
On January 20, Riot Games released a statement on Twitter saying it experienced a social engineering attack. The developer assured players that the breach didn’t affect their personal data. Four days later, hackers made a demand for 10 million dollars. According to Vice, the ransom note stated: “Dear Riot Games, we have obtained your valuable data, including the precious anti-cheat source code and the entire game code for League of Legends and its tools, as well as Packman, your usermode anti-cheat.”
Along with the letter, the cybercriminals shared a PDF file that proves the claim is real. The hackers stated that their motivation is completely financial, and they don’t want to harm the company’s reputation. What was Riot Games’ response?
According to PCMAG, Riot Games won’t pay a dime. After all, LoL is a free game. Still, the developer has concerns. According to the company: “Truthfully, any exposure of source code can increase the likelihood of new cheats emerging.” For now, the creator of League of Legends, Valorant, and Legends of Runettera has nothing to do but continue improving its internal security.
