Do NOT buy the iPhone 14 Pro – (not) a Review
This is NOT an iPhone 14 Pro review
I know this is not the normal video you’re used to getting from me, in fact, I’ve literally never done a review — mainly because I think there are a ton of creators way better at that than I am — so this is not a review — this is not that — this is just a thing that I made
And I decided to make it because I just think you should know some things that maybe other people you’re watching aren’t conceying.
I’m not doing any any b-roll or anything, like why? You know – you know what it looks like — I just wanna talk about the phone
This is one of the most questionable upgrades for me in years. Like, I’m having such a different reaction to this upgrade than I’ve had with any of the other phones for some reason.
Don’t get me wrong. This is an amazing phone — but so is the 13 Pro, and so is the 12 Pro
My point is, if it’s hard for me to justify this phone, it’s probably even harder for a lot you. Idk There’s nothing here that I’m really thrilled with. Ya know what, let me give you a list of the things that I like about this phone
The display, I like that it’s brighter. That’s really nice.
The photos and particularly the video that comes from this phone is nicer than the previous model — but not by a lot. Like, yeah, I can see it, but I make videos for a living. I have the eye for it. If you handed this to your mom and asked her which photo or video came from which phone — she wouldn’t know
Action mode is really cool. Apple’s new video stability feature. But it’s more of a party trick right now. It’s a gimmick. For what it says it does, it works well, but unless you have a ton of light -like unless you’re outside – it is not usable for anything other than fun. The artificating and flickering in the video just makes it, not great. It reminds me a lot of when slow-motion first came out on phones. Like yeah, that’s cool, I’m glad we can do this, but the video looks like it was recorded with a calculator.
The A16 chip inside this thing is super fast. But so is the A15, and A14 and A13 — they’re all fast — apple silicon has been so fast for so long that we can’t outrun it
And finally, I like the dynamic island – but we’ll talk about that in a second
There are two things, right on the surface, that make this stand out. Like yeah, minor upgrades across the board, but if I had to, I would boil this phone down to two things.
The always on display and Dynamic Island
In regards to the always-on display – I turned it off. It literally upset me. With any other always on display from any other brand, the screen is off off – other than the clock and key notifications and stuff, but you can tell that the screen is off. Not with as this thing. I’m sorry, but it is so bad.
I get that they made it different and I get that it’s more complex than what I’m about to make it out to be — but it doesn’t matter what it is – it matters how it makes me feel — and it makes me feel anxious.
When this is just set down, it just looks like the screen brightness is turned down a lot. And keep in mind, for like the last 10 years of me using iPhones, apple has trained me that when my screen turns on, that means I have a notification.. So every time I look down and see my screen the way it is “always on” it makes me think I got a notification and I pick the thing up and realize that it’s not a notification- it’s just this “feature”
That happened so many times in my day that I just couldn’t. I just couldnt anymore
On top of that, battery life – with the always on display enabled – is significantly worse than I’m used to. Another reason to not even play with that.
Okay, now let’s talk about Dynamic Island. For the most part, I do like it. I think its really cute. I think the animations are smooth and responsive, especially on the 120hz screen. I love that what would normally be a design sore – they used to blur the lines between hardware and software. If it’s gonna be there anyway, you might as well make it useful. And I like that a lot of core apps use that space and you can still keep on eye on things when you’re in other apps.
It is useful. It is cute.
If you have an iPhone 11 Pro or older – or a non-pro device – then yes – this phone is an upgrade for you.
The iPhone 14 Pro is more luxury than an upgrade. And I’m very lucky in the sense that I can afford this luxury. I’m glad I have it. But that’s all it is. And it kinda comes down to: how bad do you wanna experience dynamic island? A whole new phone amount?
If you have the money, this is a great phone, go buy it. But if you’re watching this video because you’re struggling to make a decision on whether or not to switch from your 12 Pro or 13 Pro to this — I just cant tell you to do that
