OSI – 4 : Need for the OSI model
In our last lesson, we learned how important standards are for communications systems. In order for systems to communicate over a network, they must follow certain rules or protocols. These protocols describe everything from the quality of the wire to the patterns of data flowing through it, to the format of the communication being sent or received.
The OSI model is a blueprint for all the different standards that make up networking communication. The « open » part of Open Systems Interconnection refers to the fact that devices that comply with the model are based on open standards. Hardware and software manufacturers create products according to these standards, so their products interoperate and intercommunicate with one another.
The concept of this open system is critical to all communication devices and protocols. Compliance with the OSI model gives every manufacturer an equal market opportunity, resulting in greater competition and less expensive products for consumers, while at the same time allowing for rapid innovation and growth. Verifying OSI model compliance is also important for customers, as this will guarantee that equipment purchased from different vendors will interoperate. #OSI #OSILayers #OSIModel
