The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a seven-layer telecommunications architecture that was developed in the 1970s. The first four layers of the OSI model are commonly referred to as the « Application Layer », « Presentation Layer », « Session Layer », and « Layer 4 Transport Layer ».
These four layers are responsible for providing an abstract interface between different applications or systems on a network. For example, the Application layer provides services such as communication, naming, and file sharing, while the Session layer guarantees the delivery of data packets without loss or corruption.
Layers 5 through 7 provide various technical standards that allow systems at each layer to work with those above it. Layers 5 and 6 define how data is formatted for transmission across networks, while layers 7 and 8 manage large amounts of traffic by managing queues and controlling flows within computer networks.
