Black Basta ransomware made over $100 million from #shorts #ransomware #attacks #cybersecurity

The Russia-linked ransomware gang, Black Basta, has accumulated over $100 million in ransom payments from 90 or more victims since its emergence in April 2022. The group employs double extortion attacks, stealing sensitive data before deploying ransomware to encrypt systems. Victims are pressured to pay by the threat of data publication on Black Basta’s dark web leak site. Notably, at least 35% of known victims paid a ransom, with the largest payment being $9 million and an average of $1.2 million. Black Basta, emerging as a Ransomware-as-a-Service operation, is suspected to be a rebrand of the Conti group and has connections to the FIN7 hacking group. High-profile victims include the American Dental Association, Sobeys, Knauf, Yellow Pages Canada, Toronto Public Library, Capita, and ABB. The group’s sophisticated tactics and reluctance to recruit suggest experienced operators.
