My Power Mac G4 (with Apple Studio Display)

The ninth addition to my Mac collection, another Power Mac G4, this time with an Apple Studio Display (ADC). The Power Mac is a Digital Audio model and I have an Apple Pro Keyboard and Pro Mouse to go with it. I also got an AirPort card with it so it’s not half bad for something that only costed $20 for everything. Enjoy this one.

I’m collecting all New World Macs (since the iMac G3) with PowerPC processors (not Intel). I will upload videos of each of them when I get them.

you cannot install Leopard on a computer with a G3 Processor, or run it, you have to upgrade the CPU and then get some kexts from the leopard betas

did the display show anything at all? try plugging in another monitor, it could be a bad invertor or backlight tube

install Opera Web Browser too, its way better than safari or firefox for mac on these older machines (I have a 333MHz iMac and a 400MHz PowerMac, both are good for web browsing with opera, but horrible with anything else

I just recently traded for a G4 533 MHz with an Apple Studio Display. I have to say it's nice. It's amazing how well these have scaled over the years. I plan on upgrading the processor to a dual core of at least 1 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM, probably a GeForce 4 TI (unless you have any better price efficient options you can think of), and Leopard (I got it with Panther. This is actually the first Mac I've ever owned personally, but I was a film student so I've worked with Macs a lot in the past.

@RabbidPeanutButter I got mine with an Airport card too, but you could probably just run some ethernet cable to yours. I know at least my G4 has an onboard NIC.

I'm watching this video on a Dual 450MHz "Gigabit Ethernet" G4! I'm totally amazed I can still watch YouTube fine on this thing! I'm just using a standard NEC monitor with mine though.

@stogi5959 There are flat screen CRT's and Normal CRT's. Normal CRT's have a curved glass over the fornt and the flat screens have a flat piece of glass and use slightly different ways to get the image on the screen. Flat screen doesn't mean LCD.

@ThePhoneUpdate Same here! Except I've got the Dual 500Mhz one. If you not using it already, try mactubes. It's an amazing program and much better then flash in a browser.

It can play youtube videos via quicktime if you set it up which is very efficient on these old macs.

@thedarkone2134 As I consider myself an ameture video editor, it's needless to say that the PowerMac isn't my main computer, however thanks for the tip, I'll check that out 🙂

I think older Mac products like the iMacs, Power Mac G4s, external displays, etc. look a lot cooler than the stuff they ship today.

Depends what you want from them, YouTube in the browser on these things is not good (You can use the YouView program though) and even my Dual-G4 is rather sluggish on alot of websites. They're still pretty capable for many offline and light online tasks though.

if you want to be a real powerpc user, install os 9, and find some programs from the 1999-2003 era such as photoshop, illustrator, cubase, reason, live, macromedia programs like flash + fireworks, all of these apps will run better on this computer under os 9!!!!!!! not os x.. it will run osx but not WELL. to get the most from this machine i really highly suggest you delve into the world of os9.. the whole world was run on this os from 1999-2003, therse many programs + books on programs that you can get for practically next to nothing.. whats more is that understanding these old programs will set u up for a deeper understanding of the more current versions. u can find tons of programs to try for os9 on macintoshgarden and macos9lives sites good luck + happy exploring! theres much to discover if you try!
