The 2D Universe is the official name of the world where the 2D era, the first generation of the GTA Series with games played from the top-down perspective, takes place. In spite of its name, the graphics of this era are partially 3D. Unlike the following two universes, the plot relation between its different games is not clear.

The 2D Universe was introduced in 1997 by the original Grand Theft Auto. It was followed by its expansions GTA: London 1969 and GTA: London 1961 and finally Grand Theft Auto 2. It ended with the introduction of the 3D Universe in Grand Theft Auto III.

The 3D Universe is the official name[1] of the fictional world where the second-generation games of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, previously known as the Grand Theft Auto III era and less commonly referred as the PlayStation 2 era, take place. This generation consisted of six titles released from 2001 to 2006. A game pack containing all « The Definitive Editions » of GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas (entitled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition) was released on November 11, 2021.

The 3D Universe is known by this name because it introduced fully three-dimensional game graphics, as opposing to the previous 2D Universe. However, one of the games set in it, Grand Theft Auto Advance, uses 2D graphics and the HD Universe, its successor, also uses fully 3D graphics, though improved ones.

The HD Universe is the official name[1] of the third and current canonical universe of Grand Theft Auto series, after the 2D Universe and the 3D Universe. It is named for the high-definition 3D graphics introduced in it. The generation comprising the games set in HD Universe is the HD era, previously known as GTA IV era.

The HD Universe started out in 2008 with the release of Grand Theft Auto IV. The game was followed by two DLC packs called The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, both of which occur at the same time as GTA IV. In 2009, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, a game for mobile platforms set one year after GTA IV with a stand-alone story. The generation was known as the GTA IV era until the announcement of Grand Theft Auto V in 2011, which revealed that games within the series are set in different universes based on their graphics (2D, 3D and HD), contrary to the previous belief that each numbered title started a new era. Grand Theft Auto Online was released two weeks after Grand Theft Auto V and it is currently the latest title in the series.
