The OSI model (Open System Interconnect) is a seven-layer theoretical stack that may be used to explain how a network works. The concept was established to standardise networks in a way that permitted multi-vendor systems; previously, you could only have a single vendor network since the devices could not interact with one other.

The Layers:
Application (layer 7)
This is the layer through which the application and the user communicate. For sending emails using Outlook, application-specific protocols such as SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) are utilised.
Presentation (layer 6)
This layer prepares the data so that it may be understood by the receiving application. This layer can also encrypt and decode data if necessary.
Session (layer 5)
This layer is responsible for establishing and terminating of connections between devices.
Transport (layer 4)
The OSI Model’s transport layer is utilised for error handling and data sequencing to ensure that no data is lost. This layer also includes port numbers for the source and destination.
Network (layer 3)
The network layer is in charge of IP address routing. The source and destination IP addresses are added to the data.ed at this step of the OSI model.
Data Connection (layer 2)
The physical address (MAC Address) is appended to the data at this layer, which contains the source and destination MAC addresses.
Physical (layer 1)
The physical layer is the OSI model’s bottom layer. Its primary function is to transport data over physical hardware, such as an Ethernet cable, to the intended destination.
