The world cannot live without IPv4 addresses. However, we have exhausted all 4.29 billion unused IPv4 addresses. Although new technologies have helped alleviate the shortage of this vital resource, it continues to be in high demand.
Naturally, IPv4 addresses have earned the commodity status. Will this last or will the value of IPv4s depreciate in time? How can IPv4 holders monetize this desirable resource? What are monetization options, and how do they compare?
Join Nick Winters, Geoff Huston, Gabe Fried, Serge Radovcic and Vincentas Grinius in their discussion of the IPv4 commodity status and the position of the resource within the global market.
We start the webinar with an overview of the current IPv4 status as an intangible asset for companies across the globe. IPv4 resources are not exactly an asset that’s kept in the company books, but at the same time, can be an asset worth millions of $.
One of the key aspects of the discussion is the visibility of IPv4 as an asset that holds significant value and can be bought, sold, leased and monetized.
According to Nick Winters and Gabe Fried, many IP owners are not aware that IPv4 can be a significant source of revenue, or that they could sell their IP assets for a profit. This is what makes IPv4 addresses a very complex asset to manage and maintain from an accounting point of view.
Geoff Huston also shares his thoughts on the history of IP addresses, IP address markets and IPv4 exhaustion. He suggests that the IPv4 market is based on wide use and the value perceived by people who participate in the market. The internet was never meant to be what it currently is, and the limitations from the past are catching up to the costs of the future. As a result, IP addresses are becoming a commodity.
Over time, as the market aged and the demand increased, the prices went up, particularly during the last few years. Gabe Fried provides insights into IPv4 price history before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also notes that it is very difficult to buy IPs and then sell them immediately.
Vincentas Grinius shares his thoughts on the price correlation between IPv4 leasing and buying. He notes that the choice between leasing and buying depends not only on the IP market situation but also on the overall financial situation and scaling scope of the company. He also adds to consider the IP market trends between regions and RIRs. ARIN and RIPE are the most popular, with APNIC following suit.
