Understanding IPv6 Addresses | Free CCNA Training Course

Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam.

Section 3 of this series covers IPv6. This covers topics such as an IPv6 overview, how IPv6 addresses work, address types, address assignment, and routing with IPv6.

The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description.

In this video, we’re going to cover:
0:00 Address Format
3:40 Simplifying IPv6 Addresses
4:22 Subnets and Prefixes
6:49 Header Format

IPv6 Addresses look different to IPv4 addresses. IPv4 is 32-bits long, and is broken into four parts separated by dots. IPv6 is 128-bits long, separated into 8 groups, separated by colons. IPv6 also uses hexadecimal numbers, while IPv4 uses decimal numbers.

IPv6 addresses can be simplified using a couple of rules. In each hex group, you can remove any leading zeros. If there are several groups of zeros together, they can be replaced with a double-colon.

IPv6 addresses don’t have a subnet mask as such. They have a prefix length, which is written in CIDR notation. The most common prefixes length is /64, although other values can be used too.

While IPv6 headers are longer (due to the larger addresses), they are much simpler than IPv4.
