How Network Engineers should PLAN implementations (VLANs and Subnetting as a special guest)!
Network engineers are DOERS – we don’t enjoy sitting down to plan. Even the thought of a one-hour planning session causes our eyelids to droop. So, in this video, I reach from one network engineer to another on the method that I use when planning network deployments.
In one sense, this is two videos in one: teaching you how to plan and applying that skill to VLANs ans Subnetting. In the end, both are important. I’ll show you how to plan while reviewing the strategy we used at Veeya MSP (https://theveeya.com) to implement our VLAN and subnet structure.
Key topics:
0:15 Why you need to PLAN VLANs before implementing
1:00 VLAN project overview
1:36 Subnet plan review
2:14 How network engineers should plan VLAN deployments
4:28 Using the whiteboard method
7:13 Translating the brainstorm plan into phases
9:03 The final phase of planning: the Configuration Checklist
9:22 Why I don’t use Excel for checklists
12:04 The difference between a project plan and work steps
