Farallon MacRecorder – Serial port sound interface for 1980s Macintosh computers
I managed to grab a new-in-box MacRecorder off eBay to use with my Mac SE… an 8MHz Motorola 68000 powered black-and-white computer from 1987, running System 6.0.8 through MacOS 7.5.5. Here is an unboxing and a quick demo of using the device with its included software SoundEdit. I eventually want to use this for music production, using Super Studio Session to make beats, a 4 track for adding real instruments and vocals, and then the MacRecorder for recording back to the computer… essentially being able to make final sound files for upload entirely from a Macintosh SE. This device will work on everything from a Macintosh Plus, up through the II series (II, IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIfx), SE/30, Macintosh Portable and early Powerbooks. The computers with 68020 and 68030 processors can do even quite a bit more using more advanced programs like SoundSculptor II on the recorded files.

I misspoke and said Apple computers didn’t have audio in ports until 1992, some did by the end of 1990, so I was close.
