I tried coding on my iPad for 7 days

Using an iPad as my primary device for coding wasn’t something I thought possible until I tried it. There are a number of different ways you can use a tablet as a software development device, including things like coding apps and remote desktop.

Since I have a computer, laptop and tablet for website development, I found coding and swapping devices sort of difficult especially with the fact that most environments require me to sync github in order to get back to coding my so important HTML, CSS and JS.

So picking one device to use only, the iPad meant I tried to test out different methods for programming, and I enjoyed remote desktop the most. I technically could use a single environment with all the benefits of a super computer, but on an iPad. I used JumpDesktop to do this as teamviewer wasn’t as effective.

Screen size, I don't know how we managed to code on a 800×600 screen, although it did seem big compared to 132×24 terminal.

I hated Koder on my iPad. I just found it too annoying. So I set up VS Code via Code-Server on the AWS free tier and started using it that way. However, I still prefer my MacBook for long coding sessions as after a while, the smaller screen on the iPad starts to drive me crazy.

So finally you ended up using your home PC and home monitor to code. So technically u were just using the iPad keyboard as a Bluetooth keyboard for your Home PC.

I'm by no means a 'pro' but I know just enough to be able to switch between languages after about an hour of learning the syntax.
I use REPL.IT to code on my iPad since I can just do everything through the Safari browser. Works great!

I’m using code-server on VPS with Ubuntu server and it works very fine. I can use Safari from iPad, Windows PC or my Chromebook. If I need a port mapping in my local machine, using VSCode on SSH solves that.

The storage space of my devices remains clean because I only have VSCode installed and my development environment and libraries are on the VPS.

thanks! Time to evaluate whether the extra weight between an M1 laptop and iPad Pro with a magic keyboard can justify the much better performance and screen size. I reckon laptop wins!

For me this is excellent. I've been looking for an iPad knowing the limits of coding. Having remote desktop can be useful for a full desktop machine been used remotely with an iPad.

Can you use the team viewing like app on the go while your main computer is off or do I have to leave it on for a week lol. Or am I able to turn and turn off my computer with the app when I am done?

An iPad purely for programming is silly, even with the benefits like tapping where you want the cursor because you can just get a touch screen laptop. I'm looking into this because I'm really into the note taking aspect and using it for art, but it's too expensive to justify buying it just for that purpose. So I look at it as a replacement for my laptop, but then it isn't really a replacement if I can't program on it. So for me, the ability to remote desktop to my PC is a huge game changer for buying an iPad

Please help me. I am making apps for Android. There is a software command that I add to the app icon, so I can install it on the iPhone. Do you have this code?

Jump desktop does have full mouse support for some spesific mouses. Even Long before ipadOS got mouse support. So if you buy the right mouse, you will be able to use it just as a regular mouse. . I use the tiny ergonomic mouse called swiftpoint and it works perfect together with the jump desktop app
