A Waste of a Macintosh Classic? You decide? Raspberry Pi Upgrade
Okay, so here it is, another person claiming the ultimate Raspberry Pi build! But that was actually click-bait, but really, if I had been honest and said “Another mediocre Raspberry Pi entry” would you have clicked on this? I do consider it to be above average and not mediocre. If you have not switched from booting from the SD card to booting from the USB 3.0, you are really missing out. The USB SSD drive is soooooo much faster:) Check out ETA Prime’s channel for instructions on how to boot from the USB rather than the SD card.
For those who may be upset that I used Macintosh Classic II cases for this build, I have 67 compact Mac cases (I’ll do a video on that latter) with only 46 sets of repairable Logic-boards / analog-boards / power supplies / CRTs. Of the empty cases I have, 11 of them are either Macintosh Classics or Classic IIs, let’s face it, those were terrible machines, all though they looked the best out of the compact Macs. I’ve been repairing Macs for a very long time and can tell you that there is no shortage of Macintosh cases in the world, only salvageable electronics.
So here is a list of the components I used with links, and the first link is ETA Prime’s instructions on how to Boot from the USB without a SD card
I …..DO NOT….. make any money off of the below links. Almost all of which were purchased from Amazon, except for the Piryte cooler board and iPad 2 LCD and driver board, that way I build up my Amazon card points:)
PiRyte power management and cooling board- https://www.tindie.com/products/tomtibbetts/mini-atx-psu-cool-kit-for-raspberry-pi/
iPad 2 LCD- This is from a great, and very friendly seller who offers some limited tech support, but for the price you can’t beat it- https://www.ebay.com/sch/vista-labs/m.html?_trksid=p3692
And that particular LCD is a LP097X02-SLNV, and the only driver board I could find that works is from this seller- https://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-VGA-2AV-LCD-LED-Controller-Board-kit-for-LP097X02-1024X768-panel-Screen/153591471320?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=453612039744&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Whoops, I lied about where I got things from, I purchased my RPi 4 from PiShopUS, they were the only ones who seem to be able to keep RPi 4s with 4gb or 8gb, of RAM in stock, I just received two RPi 4s with 8gb of RAM today- https://www.pishop.us/product/raspberry-pi-4-model-b-2gb/?src=raspberrypi
Geekworm SSD expansion board- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088HCY4TH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
64GB SSD NGFF- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078H5F4LQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cooling fan- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084RCBSBX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yep, I lied again, I bought the USB ports from this eBay seller- https://www.ebay.com/itm/Panel-Mount-D-type-USB-3-0-metal-connector-Female-Female-connector-jack-socket/112996875691?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
And yet, another lie, I bought the Ethernet extension from here- https://www.ebay.com/itm/D-type-metal-CAT6E-RJ45-panel-mount-female-socket-connector/112661594178?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I don’t know if I’ve missed anything, but if I have, please give me a buzz. Of course I didn’t lie about anything above, but I order so much stuff, I lose track:)
Have a great week, stay safe, Please come back:)
